CUT - A Different Beat

Label: Homesleep Records
Format: CD
Slow growing, but eventually compelling debut album from 80's-influenced Italian post-punk trio, Cut

Review

‘A Different Beat’ might strike some as an ironic title for an album that keeps its rhythm – and just about everything else - simple and driving. ‘Go Bang!’ kicks the album off with some hoarse, almost spoken vocals and an insistent lower register riff (not a bass, as an idle listener might suspect – the Italian trio gets by on two guitarists and a drummer). Breakneck drumming, stomping chords and declamatory vocals dominate the rest of the album, making Cut sound a bit like Girls Vs. Boys with all the swing and suave removed, Gun Club with the blues turned down or John Lee Hooker stuck in a postpunk straightjacket. There are a few slight diversions from the main road, with a hint of desperation sneaking into the singer’s voice on ‘Sweet Words’ and some wah-like modulation of the guitar on ‘Goth Disco’. ‘A Different Beat’ is an album that takes a spin or two to get into – on first spin it might strike the listener as the same song done 12 times(‘Straight from the Retting Ground’ does have its slinky start and chorus). It also leaves a definite impression that Cut would be a great band to see live.
