New album from soul diva Beverley Knight, which was recorded in Nashville with session players who had worked with Elvis Presley and Al Green
Review
Beverley Knight’s new album, ‘Music City Soul’, was recorded in Nashville in 5 days using session players there who had worked with Elvis Presley and Al Green, and it follows on from her ‘Greatest Hits’ collection of last year.
'Music City Soul' opens with ‘Every Time You See Me Smile’, which, while a soul number, has a little bit of funk added to it. The guitar sound is the blues as it should be played, while Beverley's vocal is backed by a gospel choir.
'Ain't That a Lot of Love’ has a 1970's funk feel and a touch of jazz as well. It has an easy flow to it and also features some brass. Beverley’s mate, the Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood, appears on guitar.
‘After You’ is very radio friendly and could be a single. ‘No Man's Land’, which was was the first single, has a convincing vocal from Beverley, and a soft soul backing.
‘The Queen of Starting Over’ is another 70's style ballad, while the funky ‘Black Butta’ is reminiscent of Ike and Tina Turner and again features Ronnie Wood.
‘Saviour’ has edgy guitars and a funk rock groove. ‘Time is on My Side’ is a cover of the mid 60’s Stones track, and has a slow delivery.
‘Why Me, Why You, Why Now’ has a Friday night party feel, and is a foot mover. ‘Tell Me, I'm Wrong’ is a soft, tender little number and a song for Beverley’s women fans.
‘Trade It Up’ has a funk base, and is the sort of thing that gets played on Jools Holland's ‘Later’. Its intro sounds like something that Stevie Wonder might have recorded.
‘Rock Steady’ is very sexy in a 1970’s manner. It ends the album, but there are three bonus tracks as well, ‘Uptight’ is very smooth, a track for lovers. ‘Back to You’is an easy listening jazz number and it ends with a reprise of ‘After You’, this time in a radio edit.
