Lyrically cliched, but musically thrilling new album from punk anti-conformists Die Hunns
Review
It can’t be easy being a rocking, rolling, self-proclaiming outsider. All that raging against "the man" and his evil plan to make us all settle down, have jobs and buy houses must be pretty tiring.
It may not seem particularly radical to have a rock and roll band telling us that, "you get a car, and a mortgage, and a kid, and you’re dead" but it is all about they way they snarl. And Die Hunns have got just enough of a snarl to make it interesting. They do sound tired in places on this album, but if they are worn out on the floor then they’re just going to bite your ankles.
They are also capable of producing something more exciting than the standard noise. Nowhere is this more apparent than as on the almost spoken word verses welded to harmonised choruses and shouted interludes that make up ‘Jorge’, a hummable tale of drug dealing. Some of their other tracks also hit decent, if clichéd, rock and roll notes. So while ‘Rocknroll Boulevard’ rumbles along as a tale of outsider defiance you can’t help wondering if we need another song setting itself against conformist and family life society and sneering at anyone who isn’t as alternative as it is.
In the end, the swagger of 'You Rot Me' wins out over the songs. And though they seem to me a band who are best experienced in the flesh, I very much doubt they care at all what I think. And that is how rock and roll should be. Now if you will excuse me I’m off to buy a car and find a mortgage.
