Haunting post rock from Mogwai, a soundtrack to an experimental art house film
Review
Clearly the first choice to produce a sound track for an experimental, art-house film about probably the greatest footballer of recent times are post rockers Mogwai. And a sterling job they have done with this sound track. Another set of post rock gems from the ever-reliable band is duly present and correct.
Unfortunately this album shares the problem common to all bands that try to fit their music as a piece to a ready made jigsaw. While Mogwai do what they do so well (with all their usual aplomb) you can sense the fact that this is a project shaped to someone else’s vision.
The haunting quality of their music is still there. And much like the subject of the film there is a real brooding sense of power. Despite the beauty in the movement there is still the feeling that this could turn round and smash its forehead into your surprised body at any moment, sending you reeling to the floor.
But somehow it never quite does.
From any other band this would be hailed as a classic. It is still deserving of attention. But while existing fans would be well advised to pick up a copy, those not yet worshipping this band’s feet should start their education elsewhere.
