Slightly disappointing frist single from much acclaimed Minneapolis-based indie rockers Tapes 'n' Tapes debut album 'The Loon'
Review
This is the lead single from Minneapolis indie rock band Tapes 'n’ Tapes. The band recently brought out their album 'The Loon' to critical acclaim both sides of the Atlantic, after making a name for themselves with extensive touring and a not entirely un-helpful appearance at the world renowned South by South West Festival in Texas.
“Insistor” has an almost country rock feel to it with its fast paced drums and story telling qualities. The similarities to country, however, start and end there. It is very definitely the ‘Tapes own sound of indie rock. They have really found their own sound through the hundreds of shows they’ve played and have done well to achieve this so early in their career.
B-side 'Crazy Eights' had an unmistakably American indie feel to it, sounding a little similar to the likes of the Shins, Fugazi and the Dandy Warhols. This comes in the form of playful and light-hearted guitar and keyboard work, with vocals however being limited to some cunningly positioned “ba ba baba’s” thrown in here and there.
This is not a bad couple of songs by any means, but in all honesty I was expecting my socks to be blown off by this band, because of everything I’ve read about them. The truth is 2 minutes after hearing 'Insistor”' I cannot actually remember what it sounds like. It made no real lasting impression on me. Maybe I’m missing the subtleties or maybe I just drink to much but it just didn’t have any effect on me or my socks. I wouldn’t discount them on the basis of these two songs, but I still need convincing that they are worth all the hype.
