Over commercial and poppy fifth album from Mojave 3, the current band of former Slowdive members Neil Halstead and Rahcel Goswell
Review
Mojave 3 have been one of my favourite bands for a long time now, but on ‘Puzzles Like You’ they lose some of their magic, as it is too commercial and poppy in feel. There’s some great songs here, but they no longer sound like the band that I fell in love with.
Live they are still a great act even though long time lead guitarist and ex- Chapterhouse guitarist Simon Rowe has now left the band and Rachel Goswell is currently too ill to play live with the group.
It is a shame because this album is doing really well for the band,. It just happens to be not really what we have come to expect from the band. ‘You’ve Said It Before’ and ‘Most Days’ sound like old school Mojave 3, but the majority of it will take a tad bit longer before I wrap it around my ears like a long lost friend like I have with all their other albums. Having said that, however, I had a problem with their second album, 1998’s ‘Out of Tune’ and I love that now too, but time will tell.
