Sinking Ships - Disconnecting

Label: Select Label
Format: CD
Abrasive, appealing hardcore on second album from Seattle-based punks, Sinking Ships

Review

I like my abrasive music. It's quite a passion of mine... Bands such as Comeback kid and FC Five make me smile from ear to ear just for the sheer passion and feeling in their music. Sinking Ships have taken everything I love about this style of music and added a little bit more passion, a little bit more thought and perhaps a bit more style. With 'Disconnecting' the band have created a record that not only shows their guts, but also a strong songwriting ability with plenty of variety and ability portrayed throughout the entire album. Kicking off with 'Give Up', an empowered and heavy hitting punk song that is most definitely outside of the punk stereotype, the band create a wall of sound that fills me to the brim with energy. This doesn't happen often anymore. I may be jaded by hundreds of disappointing records and disappointing live shows but it's good to know that there are still bands out there who can "do it for me". The album at no point lets up, with incredibly powerful tracks all the way through, all of which are both musically and lyrically fantastic, telling a story throughout the album, with a specific theme. It's an album with the kind of thought and intelligence in a genre where it's so easy to "dumb down" lyrically but at no point do Sinking Ships do so. It's not a record for everybody. It is heavy, shouty, and kicking against everything the band hate. With shouts of "I don't want to be lost, I don't want to be the only one left behind" it feels as if the record has a reason for existing and I personally couldn't agree more.

Out Of Key Harmony (2003)
No-frills, unpretentious summer pop from Sacramento four piece, reminiscent of bands like Voice of the Beehive,Teenage Fanclub, the Primitives and the Bangles
