Suicide Silence - Suicide Silence

Label: Select Label
Format: CDS
Musically complex and explosive debut EP from Californian hardcore metal act Suicide Silence

Review

This is the debut EP by extreme metallers Suicide Silence and boy, oh boy they don’t do anything quietly. Hailing from Riverside, California, Suicide Silence started out as a side project as all its members played in other local bands. They, however got more serious in 2004 when they saw that the various strands of the band members' eclectic influences branded together well. As drummer Josh Goddard explains on the band's web site, the sound became more complex, savagely intense and explosive without becoming a featureless blur, which frankly is a great way to sum up the band and their sound. There is no doubt that this is a heavy band, and this is an extreme sounding EP. It is straight up no nonsense black, dark, grindcore rock music and certainly not for the faint hearted. You need not, however, be a death metal connoisseur to enjoy this. If you have a penchant for really intense sounding music then give this a try. There is certainly a death/black metal vibe in its vocals, but it is played fast and has a vein of hardcore and traditional metal as well. The opening 'Ending is the Beginning' pulls no punches and kicks off the EP in the style that Suicide Solution mean to carry on. They don’t let up for a second. The CD ends with a live track, 'Destruction of the Statue' which has the band in their natural habitat rocking the hell out of some small club, somewhere in the States. And here it is clear to see they are as ferocious live as they are in the studio. This is a really well produced band, who clearly know what they are doing. Whether or not you can appreciate the different genres in the sound they play really well. I was very surprised to learn that this was only their first release. They sound every bit as musically tight as a band that have been around for quite some time. From the live track alone it is evident that the quality of the songs is not just down to the work of a s**t-hot producer.
