Compelling third album from Tristeza, which combines "a predominantly post-rock sound with some subtle psychedelic and electronic influences"
Review
A great third album from the new line up of Tristeza, combining a predominantly post-rock sound with some subtle psychedelic and electronic influences.
After Jimmy Lavelle, the founding member of the band ,left to pursue other projects, Christopher Sprague, Jimmy Lehner and Luis Hermosillo took on two new band members; Alison Ables and Sean Ogilvie, and have come up with a gentle instrumental album that will please both old and new fans.
Opener ‘Bromas’ sets the pace of the album well with fast moving keyboards and an energetic guitar riff. ‘Balabaristas’ takes it down a notch and pushes forward the psychedelic sounds of keys and synthesisers.
‘Halo Heads’ kicks off with a prominent bass line and is another of the faster paced songs, although the pace never reaches more than a steady jog. The skipping guitar riffs add to this very bright and lively song, which is definitely a highlight of the album.
‘Wand,’ is slightly darker, with hollow drum beats building up to an electronic psychedelic sound. This gives the album a bit more atmospheric variety as most of the songs are very light and airy.
The keyboard and piano notes of ‘Aereoaviones’ make an uplifting, light introduction to a sweet and careful song and is another highlight.
The album is consistent but at times a little too consistent, leaving you feeling as though you have heard that riff or keyboard part before. This does not, however, change the overall sweet, mellow feeling of the album.
I would recommend this to any post-rock fan. It may not break any musical boundaries but with eye-catchingly cool artwork and a marshmallow psychedelic sound it’s great to stick on after a long, hard day
