Cribs - Martell

Label: Wichita
Format: CDS
Bland and soulless latest offering from the much hyped the Cribs

Review

Another indie tune with a shout-along chorus and a minimal chord riffing, another hit in all likely-hood. This is bound to please those who have fallen at the feet of the Kaiser Chiefs (whose lead singer Ricky Wilson is vocal in his praise for The Cribs) and their ilk. For everyone else it will provide a not-unpleasant few minutes listening before resurfacing on some advert for a slightly overpriced product in six months. ‘Martell’ does what it does well, actually proving rather better than the ever increasing number of similar singles that range against it. Its determination, however, to tick all the boxes without ever setting foot outside of its target audience’s comfort zone makes it all a bit too sanitised. Although there is no aftertaste here there is no real residue of flavour either. It’s not really rock and roll, is it boys?
