Gorgeous second album from electronic genius Murcof, who remains "outside of conventional genre boundaries" and whose work "is closer to modern abstract composers than to anything else"
Review
This gorgeous second album from Murcof is electronic composition pared down far beyond where it should be capable of holding this much beauty. Mexican Fernando Corona – who goes under the name Murcof – has made a downtempo masterpiece in 'Rememberanza'.
While well outside of conventional genre boundaries and being definitely demanding of the listener this album is a breath of fresh air in a time when electronica is generally ever closer to pure noise or pathetically two-dimensional joke "dance" music for Saturday night cretins.
Murcof is closer to modern abstract composers than to anything else. The sheer minimalism of 'Rememberanza' means it has to require a degree of focus from its listener. This is well repaid, however, and music this delicate is rarely as punchy.
The word "soundscape"is so overused that it seems almost unfair to apply it to something as accomplished as 'Rememberanza'. This has the strange, alien beauty of the centre of a vast city left empty in the early hours. It’s not so much a soundscape as a map of somewhere beautiful that you’ll never visit.
