Eclectic first album from new London band Clor, which "has touches of psychedelia, new wave, Americana, disco, 80's mannerisms, and also throws in great dance beats"
Review
Clor's debut is a wonderful piece of work that over eleven tracks, engages the mind and the brain very well indeed. It has touches of psychedelia, new wave, Americana, disco, 80's mannerisms, and also throws in great dance beats.
It kicks off with 'Good Stuff', the band's debut single which was only released on 10 inch and in a limited edition of 1000. 'Good Stuff'recalls Pink Floyd during the era that Syd Barrett was still in the band with its groovy edged guitars and cool dance beats over the top of which a Robyn Hitchcock-type vocal glides over it.
'Outlines' and 'Love and Pain' follow, both of which are singles and both of which are reviewed elsewhere. 'Hearts on Fire'again has a Robyn like vocal and is big and bouncy.
'Gifted' is much slower and more downbeat, a bit like a slower superior version of Hefner without the sex content.'Stuck in a Tight Spot' is thrashy and faster with a wacky Devo meets USA new wave feel.
'Danger Zone' is pure electronica and is like Gary Numan having a night out at an 80's disco and loving every second of it. 'Magic Touch' is pure Prince, when he was very good at being Prince, while 'Making You All Mine' is very early 80's flavoured with a robot like vocal and a cutting edge guitar.
'Garden of Love' sounds a bit like the Cure's 'A Forest' before getting faster, and becoming a strange combination of 80's cheesy disco beats and weird Americana new wave. 'Goodbye' ends the CD and is soft and slow and a perfect evening song.
A very fine debut album, entirely recorded in a bedroom in Kennington in South London.
