Kiosk - One Day I'm Going To Go Stratospheric On You And, Chances Are, You'll Thank Me For It

Label: Surface2air
Format: CDS
Harsh-sounding, but excellent debut single from Kiosk, the new project of former Julian Cope guitarist Donald Ross Skinner

Review

Kiosk gave their first ever interview to me for Pennyblackmusic. 'Stratospheric', or 'One Day I'm Going to go Stratospheric on You and Chances are You'll Thank Me for It' to give it its full title, has already been out before on limited 7 inch, but this is their first CD single. 'Stratospheric' has angry PJ Harvey-style vocals which have a Clare Grogan perkyness to them. They are sung by Krissie Nicholson, but the words are written by Donald Ross Skinner, formerly of Freight Train, and Julian Cope's main guitarist from 1984 to 1994. Donald's guitars on this are harsh to say the least and dirty as hell. 'Sick Blues', the second track, has a rockabilly Morrissey feel to it, with a vocal that sounds both like Sonya Aurora Madan from Echobelly and Shirley Manson from Garbage. On 'Daylight Robbery' Krissie's vocals sound like Stacey McKenna from Tompaulin and Louise Wener from Sleeper while the music is as lovely and soft as the Velvet Underground's 'Sunday Morning' 'Make it Stop' recalls Drugstore both in its dreamy vocals and music, but has more experimentation. This is quite unlike anything else you will have heard before from Cope's ex-guitarist and is excellent because of it.
