Those cheeky Coachwhips are passing this off as a live album, but don’t be fooled. This is yet another studio album from the band, hot on the heels of ‘Bangers vs Fuckers’, which came out of the end of last year. This album is a bit longer than its predecessor, at a whopping 21 minutes. If it’s actually possible, ‘Peanut Butter and Jelly…’ is rawer sounding than ‘Bangers vs Fuckers’ and although it isn’t live, it captures the energy of their live shows, the vocals almost lost in a sea of noise. The photos of the band’s assorted post-gig cuts and bruises on the inside sleeve give a good indication of the kind of show they put on. Like the last record, this is pretty unrelenting, and couldn’t really be much longer than it is. ‘Letter 2 London’ is a great track, and you can almost sing along to ‘Oops Uh Uh’, but it’s the kind of record that you listen to all at once – it hits you full on in the face, and then it’s gone. As a record in itself, it’s fantastic. Coachwhips are a garage rock band at heart, but they don’t really sound like anyone else. The strange thing about them is that although their music is noisy and drenched in feedback and the vocals aren’t easy to pick out, you can’t help tapping your feet and nodding your head to the music – even people who aren’t fans of noisy music seem to be able to appreciate them. Excellent arty party music – bloody noisy, but you sure can dance to it.
