Review
When I buy and listen to new records, I’m always mindful of where they place in the greater scheme. Where do I think they will finish in the end-of-year albums poll? The only time when this stops is January, when my thoughts turn to what albums I’m most looking forward to, and especially to which new bands I need to mark out as tips for the future. It is the only time when singles play as big a role in my musical outlook as albums.
Some of my tips I have interviewed in past months, but the latest addition is Reigns, even though I have heard only these two tracks. Both sides of this 7” single feature blissful combinations of post-rock, electronica and pastoral folk. It’s a very mellow release, but it has enough melody hidden away to make it a thorough joy to listen to. I know absolutely nothing about them beyond that they come from somewhere in the West country, and that intrigue only adds to the appeal.
An album is released at the end of this month, which I am thoroughly excited about hearing. This is a brilliant debut single.
