Excellent outer-space rock on second album from red Giant, one of the few bands in the stoner/doom/desert rock canon to really be stamped with its own character
Review
Red Giant’s masterpiece 'Ultra-Magnetic Glowing Sound' was a prime slice of outer-space rock, one of the few in the stoner/doom/desert rock canon to really be stamped with its own character. Topping it was an unlikely feat at best, but Red Giant has hardly disgraced itself with its relatively down-to-earth follow-up 'Devil Child Blues'.
The first big change is on the low end: The group has a bassist now (perhaps they always did, but 'Ultra-Magnetic Glowing Sound' was really about the interplay of two guitars).
The riffs seem more direct, the stomp is heavier, the vocals more growly … the group of weirdos is now more “typical” of the stoner rock crowd. Further, the songs are shorter -- not by a whole lot, but “long” on 'Devil Child Blues' is six minutes, not nine. (That long song is a spiritually faithful cover of the Stooges’ 'Funhouse' and yes, there is saxophone.)
Fortunately they retain a lot of their signature sound Jaded rock critic that I am, I’ll still get my ultra-magnetic kicks from their classic first “full-length”, but 'Devil Child Blues' is still a Grade A kick in the ass – a shootout between laser-gun guitars where everyone wins.
