"Well written and enjoyable indie pop" from Welsh 5 piece, the Hot Puppies, who recall Pulp in their heyday
Review
I remember wearing green eyeliner back in the 80's, but the Hot Puppies are by no means another 80s band. This 5 piece indie pop band hail from Aberystwyth. They don't , however, conform to the Welsh indie scene nor the current mode for nu-metal, but are slightly more reminiscent of the pop sounds of Pulp circa 94. Vocally, Becky Newman has a little-girl lost vocal style, but leaves her Welsh accent at home, saving any comparisons with Catatonia.
'Green Eyeliner', the title track on their 5th single, is a well written and enjoyable pop song. The other 2 songs on the single, 'A Small Killing (On This Day)' and 'All We've Got to do is Kiss' are also good, but you can see why Green Eyeliner is the title track.
On the evidence of this single, the band play well together, and it would be good to see them putting an album out and touring a bit more extensively in the coming year - perhaps a place at Leeds/Reading Festival could see them being pushed into the limelight a bit more.
