Side project debut from the Libertines' Pete Doherty, which finds him moving into grown-up romantic balladry
Review
I am not a fan of the Libertines, but this is cool stuff and will appeal both to Peter Doherty's teenage audience and also to us older folks who like his move into adulthood
'For Lovers' is in the same vein as Richard Ashcroft's 'This Song is for Lovers'. Both are grown up ballads aimed at the romantic market. And both work because of this. 'For Lovers' is perfectly formed. It is clever lyrically and easily one of the year's best singles to date. And this is from the tearaway who ended
up in jail for robbing his band mate's flat.
'Back from the Dead', its B side, is basically the Libertines in all bar name. it is fast and punky and everything you want from the guy. it is tailed ended with a PC Rom shot video which was directed by the Jesus and Mary Chain"s Douglas Hart.
I went to the Virgin Megastores signing in London for the launch of this and it took me 3 hours and 50 minutes to get my copy signed. It was full of teenage wanna be punks who no doubt were still wetting themselves the next day for kissing and signing Petes body and declaring their love for this modern day rogue.
