Uncohesive, but often endearing combination of "free jazz, funk, angular rock, dub, death metal and ambient " from technically perfect instrumental duo, Nice Nice
Review
Nice Nice like to make the point that they play live. Every sound is actually created by human hand. Big deal, I hear you say. But this two part instrumental ensemble, comprising of guitarist Jason Beulher and percussionist Mark Shirazi, can really play. And playing live gives the music a rare energy lacking in other music of a similar style made electronically. Where much of “Electronica” is cold, Nice Nice are clearly passionate, and that helps.
This record is not perfection realised. In fact, the limitations of wholly instrumental music to transcend its notions of technicality and appeal to a casual listener as well as a purist are often evident here. Without an appreciative enquiring listener this music is easily lost. Some of the tracks are mere exercises rather than fully realised adventures.
But this mess of free jazz, funk, angular rock, dub, death metal and ambient is often endearing, if rarely very cohesive. I admire the spirit of striving for something new here, and I admire the technical expertise, but I’m not as yet convinced that this is quite the true classic. I hope though they keep on looking.
