Delays - Long Time Coming

Label: Rough Trade
Format: CDS
Joyous, jangly retro rock on second single from the much hyped Delays

Review

Taking their cues from the La’s and jangly 60's pop, Delays (defiantly minus the definite article) have conjured up a summery, shiny, joyous slice of angst-tinged retro-rock. It harks back to the brighter moments of the Britpop of a few years ago, and is an apt release from a band that have been around in various guises since those times, and who are finally coming close to mainstream success with a neat synchronicity with bands such as the Coral. It’s throwaway (at this stage, having only heard the single, although the forthcoming album might put the song into a wider context), but fun, utterly beguiling and as catchy as ‘There She Goes’. The band are enjoying (perhaps the wrong word) huge amounts of hype at the moment, with both of their small London shows so far having sold out months in advance. It may be that they fail to match the heights of ‘Long Time Coming’ or, more likely, that the album is as good as this, but in the meantime, this release is one to enjoy. Forget the dreary January weather, and break out the summer mood with this one.
