Mundane Music - EP1: A Place In Mind

Label: Heliotone
Format: 7"
Very personal, but easy-on-the-ear electronica from anonymous Manchester-based musician, Mundane Music

Review

For the second release of his new limited edition 8" label Heliotone , former Emma's House label boss Edward Jung has put out 'A Place in Mind', a six track EP by Mundane Music, an otherwise anonymous Manchester-based musician and solo artist. 'A Place in Mind' combines together electronic synthesisers and beats with more traditional percussive instruments and guitars. Over the top of these, Mundane Music has welded on brief snatches of sound samples of his family and friends, and children. It is a deeply personal recording, but one too which has been left open enough for the listener to add on his or her own memories and meanings. The hazy 'Sleep is a Wonderful Thing', with ghostly echoes and a soft babble of occasional voices, pictures an unsettled night of drifting in between dreams and wakefulness. 'My Seashore' meanwhile uses perky rhythms and beats, and, with a childlike sense of relish, suggests memories of a long ago perfect day spent on the beach. At 15 minutes, the one trick' A Place in Mind' is possibly the perfect length. If it was anymore its novelty would perhaps wear a little thin. Uniquely individual, however, its warmth and fundamental sense of humanity are the key components to its success, and it has a simple, but easy-on-the ear and lingering charm.
