Groundbreaking "lo-fi pippop" from CEX, aka Rjyan Kidwell, who, still in his early 20's, seems about to become one of the leading artists on the electronica scene
Review
Still in his early 20's, CEX has developed and matured a crossover of lo-fi pippop very much of his own. On listening both to CEX's other releases to date and to the 'Being Ridden' twins (vocal and instrumental LP's) in particular, the sneaky feeling crops up that he's soon to be a star. CEX's got the knack; whether it's of writing titles and lyrics or of building the structure from his MC/PC/sampler ideas. Seemingly chaotic the fragments, samples and words all come together in little Ryan's universe who we have come to know under the name of CEX (or plain sex to you and me), yet in the end it's pop music without the dreadfully boring AOR, MTV or Americana inclinations. You won't sell jeans with CEX from the speakers; you'll take 'em off.
On 'Being Ridden' the rough edges have been smoothed out a bit ; What remains is dry digital funk with all-American teen hysteria. Tthough not shy of experiment, CEX sticks to a storyline and even when using odd soundscapes, the cinematic appeal of 'Being Ridden' stands out.
'Earth Shaking Event' just has to be the 2003 Summer Slammer. "Middle finger to the indie rocksinger. Middle finger to the wack MC. Middle finger to the uncreative underground."
Amen, let's have CEX.
