Experimental "quiet and sparse" post rock release from Swiss band, Logh, on the well-established "emo" label, Deep Elm
Review
The Deep Elm label is one that is synonymous with the emo genre, and indeed releases a series called 'The Emo Diaries'. What is remarkable about the label is just how broadly it defines “emo”.
Logh are from Switzerland and play a very gentle style of alternative rock music that could even be described as post rock. The music is quiet and sparse, and there seems to be a hidden space between each of the instruments rather than the distorted and blustery production I am so used to on alt rock records. In fact the band is most reminiscent of The Appleseed Cast, but where that band would spread out the music to epic proportions Logh keep the music concise, and generally simple.
The music revolves around a tight rhythm section, powerful vocal performances and a good deal of variation in the guitar sounds from gently plucked post rock style progressions to a melodic jangle to fully fledged rock solo-ing. The songs are all distinctive and tuneful, meaning that despite the adventurous nature and
experimentation the record is not even slightly awkward to listen to.
Fans of any type of alternative guitar music should have little problems finding something to enjoy here, but when did Deep Elm actually put out a bad record? Never, that’s when.
