"As simple and as effective as a shot of whisky", stunning and much hyped debut album in which "the Velvet Underground meet James Ellroy in Memphis."
Review
On the American Death Ray’s debut, the Velvet Underground meet James Ellroy in Memphis, go to a titty bar with Sun records in the jukebox for liquid inspiration and end up in a cheap motel where the resulting music is recorded through the wall by someone in the next room.
Musically, you’re listening saxophone (courtesy of Suzzette Hendrix, who also helped out on the Deadly Snake's'I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore'), chugging Check Berry riffs, a touch of piano, bargain-basement drumming and Lou Reed-esque vocals by frontman Nick d.Ray, with fuzzy guitar or heaping organ slathered on the bottom.
Monsieur Jeffrey Evans of ’68 Comeback produces, adding just the right amount of echo to give the shakin’ and hollerin’ that spectral touch.
An album as simple and effective as a shot of whisky, walking up the same back alley as ’68 Comeback, the Gibson Brothers, the Oblivians, Bassholes, and other such disreputable characters.
