Review
The Deviates are leading the next generation of punk rock with their noticeable appetite for energy-charged music, well-crafted songs and meaningful lyrics. The punk sound of Brian (Vocals), Charley (Guitar), Donnie (Drums) and Damien (Bass) is similar in style to that formerly used by the Offspring, but, while slightly repetitive, they have advanced it so that it has a greater sense of continuity. ‘Time Is The Distance’ is the Deviates first release on the large independent label Epitaph, an indication of the respect they already commandeer in their genre.
The first track, ‘Come With Me’, blasts open a 14-track album of blinding punk rock. It is an addictive introduction to the Deviates sound and its bleak lyric suggests that if pain is all that is left then it is welcome, and embraces death as the final way out. “I can smile and say I’m all right? I’m always praying for things that will never change" sings Brian. "Now is our chance to know how it feels like to be free from all this shit”.
The Deviates hacked off message conveys feelings that many are too scared to admit or even to face up to, and the majority of the tracks on the album follow a similar line to 'Come with Me'. “It’s getting too easy to excuse my mistakes, I’ll walk this line until my conscience abandons me.” sings Brian on 'The End'. The general conveyance is that hate and pain only makes you stronger, a message that perhaps should not be overlooked.
The Deviates are pushing back the boundaries of punk rock with their melodic, moderately hardcore style. Their tightness as a band is their most positive attribute and has helped produce an album coherent with the style they have adopted. They are name to be watched out for in the future.
