When I reviewed Newcastle group Mos Eisley’s debut single, 'It’s Them...Blast Them”, a few months ago I found it to be an enjoyable release played in a US College rock style with plenty of promise for the future. In all honesty I wasn’t expecting them to establish themselves as anything more than a semi-obscure indie band. As they release this follow up single I’m beginning to change my mind. This demonstrates not only that they have more than one good song in them but also that they have enough diversity to possibly make an enjoyable album. Not only that but the band has gradually established itself on the national stage, as airplay of this song on the popular BBC Radio 1 show 'The Evening Session' testifies to. They also have a session on the John Peel show approaching in the near future.
Again, the single appears on Jason Gibbon’s Beautiful Pigeon label (subject of an interview elsewhere in this edition). It is a marked improvement on their debut. The song is barely two minutes long but is a lot tighter and more direct. The band seems to be naturally melodic, but they can also play although the song is relatively simple. One of the most pleasant things about Mos Eisley is that it isn’t immediately obvious who influences them. The songs are just pop songs but they still sound original. Unlike many groups who begin by imitating their heroes before gradually establishing their own sound, Mos Eisley seem to be aware of their identity from the start. Fans of bands like Pavement and Jimmy Eat World will enjoy this single but that isn’t to say that Mos Eisley actually sound anything like them. This is highly recommended!
