Joe Pernice's latest incarnation, Chappaquidick Skyline, is a melancholic record full of beautifully quiet instrumentation and breathy vocals that recall a time when records were about the music, not about pushing units. As with The Pernice Bros., Joe and company( the rest of the Chappaquidick Skyline lineup is pretty much the same as The Pernice Bros. minus Joe's brother Bob) continue to explore the evolution of the pop song. All the tracks on this album float along on chiming guitar progressions and Joes trademark vocal style. Songs like "The Two of You Sleep" and "Everyone Else Is Evolving" show that Pernice is still able to pen a great song. Lilting arrangements and thought provoking lyrics give the record a perfect 10 in the waking up and deciding to stay in bed all day feeling. The cover of New Order's "Leave Me Alone" is dare I say better than the original. Joe Pernice has proven that he knows how to grow. From his countrified roots in The Scud Mountain Boys through his explorations into pop music with The Pernice Bros and Chappaquidick Skyline, he seems to be working towards writing the perfect song. I for one can't wait for the next installment.
