'Fablefactory' are an aptly named band. Their new 18 song album, "American Custard", spins many tales through its 50 minutes and is filled with extraterrestial folk songs that explore themes ranging from the familiar to the strange. Born in Athens, Georgia in '96 when Davey Wrathgabar and Roxanne Martin started recording songs with friends Hank Wren and Dallas Longhorne, "American Custard" is a collection of those sessions, along with various demos that were recorded on 4 track and handheld recorders.
With clever wordplay throughout the album, the songs sound as if they were composed for lyrics. Take for instance the lines "Well we'll unfurl a flag that cannot catch flame and wave it in the faces of those who refrain" from the title track and "He lights up a cigarette with nostril flares and dragon's breath" from "Geyser".
Its no surprise that they're related to the 'Elephant 6' family. Andrew Reiger of 'Elf Power', Julian Koster of 'Neutral Milk Hotel' and 'Music Tapes' and John D'Azzo from 'The Gerbils' all contribute to this record as well as a horde of others.
Fablefactory sounds as if they had a real good time making this record and it shows in the final product. All and all, a great collection of modern pop tunes that relay their whimsical commentary on American culture.
