After almost a year of silence, 'Cody' follow up their "Anticyclone" EP with another EP for the Shinkansen camp. Sparse, echo-y guitar bits, programmed beats, sweeping synth tones, and soft vocals are the main ingredients in the mix on the 4 mellow/somber pop songs here. The lead vocals live in that almost whispery world where many a male singer goes when letting their "softer" side show. They tend to build over thecourse of the songs though and are joined by nice backing vocals along the way. At times the vocals are delivered in a way that brings to mind 'Long Fin Killie's' Luke Sutherland. While the songs carry a somber tone and run in the 5 minute range, they don't come off sounding dreary thanks mainly to the almost airy guitars and the interesting rhythms. And of course the almost 'MBV' like guitar explosions will snap you to attention as well. Somehow I was also reminded of 'New Order', but Ithink that's due to an 80's electro vibeI got. Others have mentioned 'Stereolab' and 'Kraftwerk' instead. A matter of perspective perhaps. A full length album is in the works and hopefully it won't take another year to hear from Cody again.
