Review

Just when it seemed the 3rd wave (or whatever we're up to) of "spacerock" was about to fizzle just after getting off the launchpad, along come a few releases that save the day!!! Yume Bitsu's second full length is one of them and fans of the genre should rejoice. Now, hailing from the drizzly confines of Portland,Oregon, they probably seldom get to see the stars/space, but maybe that's why their music has such a dreamlike quality to it (in fact, their name means "dream beats" in Japanese). Sure I could mention the layered guitars, the spacious drumming, the harmonized vocals, and the quiet build ups that lead to epic barrages of sound, only to come back down into the atmosphere once again. The problem with that is it could describe most any "spacerock" band in that way, and thus those words do little to distinguish Yume Bitsu from any of 100 lesser "spacerock" bands equipped with an array of guitar effects and possibly too much pot, too much time and too little talent. I could go the name dropping route and describe their music as' Windy & Carl'-esque, spacefuzz guitar with some of the structural tension of 'Mogwai' and the spaciousness of Roy Montgomery, but once again that fails to give a concrete description of their sound. yet maybe that's exactly what is so great about this CD - it isn't concrete and with each listen it's effect can be different. You can tune into the mellow, dreamy qualities and glide effortlessly over the course of these 7+ minute songs or you can let the noisy parts knock you down and launch you up making the whole trip seem like it took a matter of seconds. The songs shift and change and rise and fall and ebb and flow. "Ever seen fire in zero gravity It's beautiful. It just slides all over everything..."
