Ty Segall - Three Bells

Label: Drag City
Format: Select Format
Tedious garage rock on latest double LP from over-prolific San Francisco-based musician Ty Segall

Review

Just about every fart he's ever made appeared on record, and Ty Segall's latest double album 'Three Bells' would have a subtitle reading 'And One Bell-End' if I were to have it my way. A few tracks are painfully dull. 'Reflections', however, provides a very neat contrast between a great melodic chorus and staccato chords. 'Void' is another track I like a lot, with plenty of bangs and bursts. Hyper productive Ty Segall unleashes a bundle of new songs, which are, alas, backed up by virtually nothing. Its undecisive selection sets the tone. Ty's typical lazy indifference remains predominant throughout. 'Three Bells' sounds very much like any Ty Segall album that you've bought before. La-di-da garage punk rock, though excellent on a couple of tracks, plus predictable meanderings can't disguise that his wit may be running thin. This double LP steers far away from the energetic punk rock mayhem that I once heard, when Ty fronted Epsilons. 'Three Bells' adds little to my vast Ty Segall vinyl collection. Perhaps an extra ounce of plastic vinyl. No longer snappy or straightforward, it suffers from its disharmonic character. Dreary noodlings that spread out on a double LP mark a lack of ideas. So, if you have got thirty to forty quid to spare, do like I did.
