Not surprisingly, the original Pink Floyd album ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ - the fourth best-selling album of all time, globally - is getting the deluxe reissue treatment to celebrate its 50th birthday. A new “superior” box set will sell for £225 but there is a stand-alone live album for just £11 on CD or £22 on vinyl. There are no fresh out-takes so nothing here that hasn't been heard before - but the original recording has been enhanced with 21st century high-resolution mixes and the album still stands the test of half a century of time superbly. With its themes of alienation, paranoia, greed and craziness, this was a concept piece that completely captured the sense of disillusionment as the optimism of the 1960s faded and the more cynical (realistic?) 1970s arrived. Its tape loops, reverb effects and long instrumental interludes were a product of the prog-rock era. The production skills and musical virtuosity here are incredible - plus, at just 43 minutes long, the album was admirably concise. Highlights are numerous and hardly need spelling out - from the fine jazz-rock of ‘Money’ to Gilmour's soulful guitar on ‘Time’. Apparently Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters is working on a solo re-recording of this 1973 album - on which he was the sole lyricist. But delivering a new version of such a classic sonic landmark will be a tall order - and can the effort of doing so ever really be worth it?
