Surprisingly powerful and potent first album in seven years from electronic duo Leftfield
Review
Electronic duo Leftfield have released their first new album in seven years, 'This Is What We Do' - and it is a buoyant return.
Which is impressive because the record was created in challenging circumstances.
Founder Neil Barnes, now accompanied by recording engineer Adam Wren, completed the record while awaiting an urgent operation for recently-diagnosed bowel cancer. The surgery has now been undertaken and Neil Barnes, now 62, has been given the all-clear - so plans are going ahead for a future tour, the previous one having been cancelled, pending Neil's treatment and recovery.
Given these circumstances, 'This Is What We Do' is surprisingly powerful, capturing one of the UK's most popular dance acts still at their potent best.
The title track is especially strong, in the tradition of 1999's 'Phat Planet' – the tune that sound-tracked the award-winning “surfers” TV commercial for Guinness. There are two melodic Kraftwerk tributes in 'City Of Synths' and 'Machines Like Me' and the final track, 'Power Of Listening'. is a warm electronica number – just perfect as a conclusion to this album. Plus there are some striking cameo appearances, too. Poet Lemn Sissay, reggae star Earl Sixteen and Grian Chatten (from Dublin band Fontaines DC) all feature.
The diversity of this comeback record is admirable – and clearly demonstrates that Leftfield are still at the top of their game.
