Accomplished fourth album from Sussex-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jules Winchester
Review
The Sussex-based singer-songwriter Jules Winchester returns with a new album of melodious original compositions on which she also plays all instruments.
Her fourth full release, following up on the acoustic country-influenced ‘The Beast’ is ‘Where Ever We Roam’. It is a self-produced collection written and recorded over the past year.
On a number of tracks there is a foray into some new musical territory, though the album still is very much in the distinctive musical mode Winchester has created for her previous work.
In addition to releasing this new record and in between appearing at different music venues around Sussex, Winchester has also written the theme track for the independent film ‘Malcolm & The Magpies’ plus she has created stop motion animation videos for her songs.
Highlights of the new ten-track collection include: the opener, the country-tinged ‘Tell Me Something Brave’; the title track; the dramatic, evocative ballad ‘You’; the emotive ‘Turn Around'; the uplifting ‘A Beautiful Thing’, also released as a video, featuring Sally Jane Hurst ; and the final track, the instrumental ‘Anticipation’ bringing this expressive collection to a confident close.
An accomplished album, imprinted by Winchester’s rich vocals, which deserves repeated listening, ‘Where Ever We Roam’ is a solid next step in this multi-talented musician’s journey.
