Intimate and understated sixth album from The Weather Station, the project of acclaimed Canadian actress and singer Tamara Lindeman
Review
Canadian actress and singer Tamara Lindeman won many plaudits for 'Ignorance', her fifth album as The Weather Station. That record used romantic heartache as a metaphor for climate change and it gave the former folk singer a chance to successfully explore pulsating disco, hi-fidelity rock and swooning electronic pop.
Whilst making that record, Tamara also developed several softer, more intimate songs that didn't fit the mood of 'Ignorance'. Not sure initially if she ever wanted to use them, she simply logged the songs on a page headed 'Ballads' in her notebook. But then several musician friends from the Toronto jazz scene saw these compositions and persuaded her to use them.
The result is an accomplished new LP called 'How Is It That I Should Look At The Stars' which Tamara insists should be seen as a companion piece to 'Ignorance' rather than a sequel. The new record was completed in just three days and, in contrast to the musical grandeur of 'Ignorance', it is nicely understated without drums or percussion adding muscle to her fine piano work and the subtle guitar, double bass and woodwind of her band.
There are some quite beautiful moments in the new release – and 'To Talk About' where Tamara duets with flautist Ryan Driver, could well become a future jazz standard.
