Well-crafted and eclectic first album in nineteen years from Glaswegian band Del Amitri

Review

Nineteen years after their last album, Del Amitri have released ‘Fatal Mistakes’, made over three weeks in a stately home in England. In founding member, singer-songwriter Justin Currie’s words this record is “a collection of bizarre tales of poisoning, pleading and bitter acceptance.” From the Glaswegian band who wrote one of the most lugubrious football songs ever – the 1998 Scottish World Cup single ‘Don’t Come Home Too Soon’- many of the tracks on this seventh album have a typically Glaswegian, brow-beaten if agreeable air about them. A complementing tenderness pervades the songs, which are well-crafted, crossing different genres, such as the atmospheric, melancholic ‘Otherwise’; the folky ‘Mockingbird, Copy Me Now’ with its acoustic guitar and accordion-like sound; and the nostalgic ballad ‘Second Staircase.’ Highlights of this thirteen-track album include: the melodic opener ‘You Can’t Go Back’ with its confident vocal delivery by frontman Currie, a rueful reflection on the passing of time; the excellent ‘All Hail Blind Love’, taking the California rock sound of The Eagles effortlessly to the banks of the Clyde; and the rousing ‘Losing The Will To Die’ with its bass-led rhythm, reverberating drumbeat and dark lyrics – “I thought I was done, I was way beyond/The solace of the sight of land/No flash of distress in the blackness/Everything beautifully planned.”.] This eclectic, quietly appealing ‘comeback’ album has all the trademark traits which so endeared Del Amitri to previous audiences, the acerbic lyrics, the compelling tunes. With its expansive emotional range, ‘Fatal Mistakes’ is a very welcome return.
