Fine mix of original songs and covers on sixth solo album from Blues Band co-founder Gary Fletcher
Review
Gary Fletcher, British musician and songwriter and co-founder of The Blues Band, has released his latest album ‘River Keeps Flowing’. Since his time with The Blues Band, when he contributed many original songs, Fletcher has emerged as an engaging artist in his own right.
This sixth album is book-ended by short instrumental intro and outro tracks. It features contributions from many accomplished musicians, including from Fletcher’s road band Alan Glen (the Yardbirds, Nine Below Zero) on harmonica, Tom Leary (Lindisfarne, Feast of Fiddles) violin, Sam Kelly (Tom Robinson, Circulus) drums, Jack Fletcher (Aphid) bass and Nick Ritchie (Mud, Canto) on lead guitar. Plus there are guest appearances from Paul Jones, harmonica, Charlie Hart, accordion, Amanda Guy, alto sax and Lol Plummer on piano. The record successfully straddles roots, Americana, folk and blues.
Lyrically led, ‘River Keeps Flowing’, has an engrossing mix of original songs and choice covers. Highlights include the noirish ‘No Shadow on the Wall ’; ‘I Couldn’t Be Asking’ about regret - with its blend of harp, violin and vocals; Blues Band-influenced ‘Something’s Got to Change’ and ‘How Do You Live?’ with its stinging guitar solo and trenchant lines.
At times introspective, at times ebullient, ‘River Keeps Flowing’ is a compelling next step on Fletcher’s inventive musical journey.
