Challenging and unpredictable debut single from London-based alternative rock act Made in Minsk
Review
Made in Minsk first formed as far back as 2014 and have been a regular presence on the London indie live circuit since then, but it has taken the five-piece until now to release their first single.
‘Where the Truth Lies’ is instantly compelling. Opening in a rush of distortion, Rick Senley and Haris Shah’s brooding guitars bounce and spark off each other, while Nicolai Caraghioz’s creeping bass lines and Neil Pearce’s smouldering drums beats bring further weight to the taut, dark sound.
Dutch singer Harmke Wijbenga is an acrobatic but controlled presence. “Spread the word/We have found the perfect dream,” she hollers as an opening line over a minute into ‘Where the Truth Lies’ in a lyric about the need for honesty and truth both in personal relationships and also in these turbulent times politically. She, however, disappears long before the end, leaving the nearly six minute number to close in a gripping ninety-second workout of epic-toned, duelling guitars and drums.
As intelligent as it is challenging and unpredictable, ‘Where the Truth Lies’ has been worth the long wait,
