Format: CD
Upbeat second album this year from acclaimed Lonodon-based indie pop outfit the Wave Pictures

Review

The Wave Pictures have come on a long way from their lo fi early albums. They have become great musicians, known to jam at live shows, but not falling into the trap of becoming over-noodly. ‘Look Inside Your Heart’ is the band’s second album of this year, the looser of the two, recorded live to reel-to-reel tape in a tiny studio in Stoke Newington. ‘Look Inside Your Heart’ is, first and foremost, a rock‘n’roll record, primarily harking back to its earliest days. The band is primarily ploughing the same furrow as Jonathan Richman, somewhere between Buddy Holly and Lou Reed. Opener ‘Roosevelt Sykes’ also channels 80's Paul Simon, and Dave Tattersall’s Edwyn Collins-like vocals give it an air of Orange Juice. Beyond that point, things become a little more rooted in American guitar music. The mellow, Velvets-influenced ‘Shelly’ is a real standout; simple, with down to earth lyrics, and a stunning solo that comes out of nowhere. It features backing vocals from Holly Holden, of Holly Holden y Su Banda. ‘Sugar’ probably channels Jonathan Richman the most, with its bright, chiming guitars and rockabilly rhythms. That, like ‘Shelly’ fits in with the ‘jangling’ songs on the album. The rest are stonesy, bluesy, driving rock’n’roll, from ‘House By the Beach’ to ‘Brian’ via ‘Dodge City Blues’ and ‘Hazey Moon’. While it’s all good, it’s the chiming, bright moments that make the biggest impression, such as the summery shuffle ‘Goodbye Spiderman’. Overall, it’s the kind of album that puts a smile on your face.

The ever-reliable Wave Pictures are back with the first of two albums planned for release in 2018. This was recorded in a single all-night session and is none-the-worse for that.
