Jeremy And The Harlequins bring the new sound of ‘New York cool’ with their second album ,‘Into the Night’.
Review
Jeremy And The Harlequins are a disgrace, I nearly cried when I saw how great they look with their leather jackets and slick rock and roll style. Their sound is worthy of my aged tears as well. The band hail from New York and somehow manage to balance a youthfully optimistic outlook with a classic sound that invokes all the greats while not sounding ‘retro’. The handsome devils that make this racket are known during the day as Jeremy Fury (vocals), Craig Bonich and Patrick Meyer (guitars), Stevie Fury (drums) and Bobby Ever (bass). They secrete cool with their classic song-writing which has been given a modern pair of eyes, no doubt covered by stylish Ray Bans. Where many bands will rely on volume or that whole wall of sound thing, their energy shines through with Fury’s delivery. I got hints of Dylan, Buddy Holly, Elvis, the Cramps and Alex Turner throughout the album, a pretty diverse mix of old and new, but a great combination in my opinion.
‘Rhythm Don't Lie’ has an air of Elvis about it, is full of attitude and confidence that cannot and will not be shaken. ‘Oh Yeah (I Did It Again)’ has more of that 1950's swinging ballad sound but it is drenched in that messy-New York cool. ‘Drinkin by myself’ delves into a more Cramps/garage rock kind of vibe. For those looking for some slower moments you too are catered for with songs like ‘For Angels’ and ‘There's a Girl’ which respectively lie somewhere between old time barber shop and Richard Hawley.
‘Let Her Run’ and ‘Big Beat’ are both Dylan-esque explained tales that follow well-treaded but not badly worn paths,
Despite the obvious 'older' feel their stripped back approach to recording gives off, there is a youthful wide-eyed-innocence that courses through the veins of Jeremy And The Harlequins. It's a modern take on classic rock music from dudes that look infuriatingly cool in leather jackets, Jeremy And The Harlequins are the sort of band I would imagine Johnny Depp goes and watches before they all go back stage together and drink their own combined fluid weight in Bourbon before riding home on motorbikes. Roll up your jeans, slick your hair back and get on board.
