Pennyblackmusic is delighted to announce that our next two Bands Nights will take place in Scotland with the much acclaimed American collective The Willard Grant Conspiracy. These will be the opening dates of The Willard Grant Conspiracy’s first European show in two years. The first of these shows will be at The Glad Café in Glasgow on Thursday September 10th and the second show will be the following night at The Wee Red Bar in Edinburgh on Friday September 11th. The latter gig will be The Willard Grant Conspiracy’s first Edinburgh show in seven years. Support at both these gigs will come from the rising Glaswegian sextet, Big Hogg. Singer-songwriter Nicola Black will also be an additional support act for the Glasgow show. Doors open at 7.30 p.m. for the Glasgow show and at 7.00 p.m. for the Edinburgh show. Tickets are also available in advance from Tickets Scotland for £10 www.tickets-scotland.com and will also be available on the night for £12. WILLARD GRANT CONSPIRACY Led by the charismatic Robert Fisher, Willard Grant Conspiracy formed in Boston in 1995 Purveyors of the very finest dark folk-noir, some thirty musicians or so have contributed to the band’s music over the years, with Fisher’s compelling stage presence remaining a central focus. Their 2003 album ‘Regard the End’ – which featured an appearance by Kristin Hersh on vocals – was included in the top 150 Albums of the Decade (as well as Album of the Month) by 'Uncut' Magazine, and it’s not hard to see why, with the album’s gothic Americana, haunting orchestration and sombre lyrics. The themes of loss and redemption may have featured regularly on all of their albums, yet musically WGC have proven to be dynamic and unpredictable, veering from refined acoustic-based collections of songs to squealing, expansive rock, the latter particularly on the 2006 album ‘Let It Roll’. They have toured in more than twenty countries; have played at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas; and have released albums on Loose Music, Glitterhouse, Rykodisc, and Kimchee Records. For this gig they will be appearing as a trio of Fisher on guitar/vocals , David Michael Curry on viola/saw and Jonah Sacks on cello, performing songs from across their nine studio albums. BIG HOGG One of the rising stars of the Glasgow scene, Big Hogg are the psych-jazz-pop-rock brainchild of guitarist Justin Lumsden, who - having cut his teeth in Aberdeen's oft-overlooked fusion scene of a few years back- brings his considerable experience and diverse influences to bear on this group. Incorporating influences such as Hendrix, Captain Beefheart and Classic Blues into their sound, , Big Hogg , which is a sextet, have just released an eponymous album on Neon Tetra, Glasgow's longest-serving independent label. NICOLA BLACK/SISTER FOX (Glasgow Only) Nicola, armed with new material written on a recent US tour, has been described as “an amazing talent” by Cameron Murray of Alive Radio. Hailing from Galloway, Nicola, who has released two albums, has been delighting audiences from Alaska to New South Wales, and is the curator and MC for the Acoustic Stage at Wickerman. Her unique blend of folk, rock and melodic pop, coupled with a massive voice, make her live performances truly memorable. She will be playing as part of her new trio Sister Fox, which also features Andrew Black and Chris Lord. NOT FORGOTTEN GIRL (Edinburgh Only) Not Forgotten Girl are a Glasgow-based duo consisting of Fiona Crawford on vocals/ keyboard/guitar and Andy Robertson on vocals/guitar. Their style is catchy raw pop, with soothing harmonies that are very easy on the ear! Andy and Fiona first met on the 26th March 2006 at the Cathouse in Glasgow (they remember it well as it was the first night the non-smoking ban had been introduced in Scotland) and Fiona was worried that as a result, no one would turn up to see her band play. Andy and Fiona have since been collaborating together in many shapes and forms musically. It wasn't until 2013 however that they started gigging together and the end of 2014 before they could agree on a band name!! Now that the ball is rolling, the duo have been penning and recording new songs which will be available later in the year. One of their new songs 'Forever' has had recent airplay from local radio stations and will be played on Jill Gellatly's Amazing Radio show from the end of August Pennyblackmusic at The Glad Café 1006a Pollokshaws Road, Shawlands.
