Hollis Brown - Gets Loaded

Label: Alive Naturalsound
Format: CD
Unnecessary and pointless remake of the Velvet Underground’s final album ‘Loaded’ from New York rockers, Hollis Brown

Review

The question still lingers over this style of project - why? Why would any self-respecting artist spend time, money and energy reproducing the artistic endeavour of someone who had gone before them? As with the once respected film director Gus van Sant, who was at the helm of 'Drugstore Cowboy' and 'My Own Private Idaho', who then went on to make a shot-for-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho', Hollis Brown have paid tribute to the Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed by running through the entire 1970 album 'Loaded'. It's not quite a note-for-note reproduction, but all the songs are played straight down the line and done in exactly the same style as the original. Nothing is added at all, and there are no radical departures or reinterpretations of Reed's originals. In fact, the most radical thing about the whole thing is that instead of starting at the beginning those band members really do know how to shake things up and push the boat out - by running through the songs in reverse order. Oh, yes. Start at the end and go backwards in reverse order. And there's no hint of irony in the band singing the line "It's the beginning of a new age". A current band looking back over 30 years to reproduce that era. Certainly a new age there. The whole thing really is utterly pointless. That might be a little harsh, 'Gets Loaded' grew out of the band taking part in a tribute to Reed after his death and then recording the album for Record Store Day and now it gets a 'proper' release. Still though there seems to be little difference between Hollis Brown and the likes of Björn Again or No Way Sis - just a tribute act. Just play the original album.
