Upbeat and quirky combination of indie rock, psychedelia and pop on second EP from Rome-formed but now London-based band, Turnpike Glow
Review
A four piece band formed in Italy, Turnpike Glow is now based in London and just about to release their second EP - 'Fünke Pop'; the title is inspired by cult American TV show 'Arrested Development'.
The first track on the EP is ‘Heels In Madrid’, it is an indie pop number that romanticises the city of Madrid, the song showcases lead singer Sandro Schiena’s unusual and charming vocals. It is a gentle number with a breezy feel that makes you want to lie back in a summer field.
‘Her Flaming Lips’ tells the story of a girl who is a fan of the Flaming Lips, a band in which Turnpike Glow have turned to for inspiration. It starts off with a catchy guitar hook, and has the ability to remain stuck in your head for quite some time after listening!
Turnpike Glow has managed to combine indie rock, psychedelia and pop to create a sound that is not too dissimilar from bands such as Super Furry Animals or Phoenix, yet they still manage to retain uniqueness. There is plenty of synth and every song is experimental in the sound it creates.
The whole of the EP is upbeat and quirky. Personally I’m still trying to work out if I enjoy this sound. I am, however, eager to go to a Turnpike Glow gig as I feel the songs would translate to a live audience in an entirely different way.
