Black Dice - Mr Impossible

Label: Ribbon Music
Format: CD
Chaotic, but mind expanding and unmissable latest album from New York-based experimental three-piece, Black Dice

Review

‘Pinball Wizard’, the first tune off this avant garde, drum 'n' bass, electro…whatever the hell it is, has a part that sounds like the music from 'Black Adder III'. Need I say more? Black Dice are all out madness, seemingly all over the place, experimental at its most experimental and noisy, but at the same time without being too loud. I love it. Track two, ‘Rodriguez’, doesn’t let up any. It begins off sounding very much like Daft Punk on a scratched CD, and descends into the filthiest disco beat I have ever heard. It just gets better and better. The brain child of New York based trio Eric Copeland, Bjorn Copeland and Aaron Warren, Black Dice comes along as part of 15 years worth or work, and very clearly, experimentation within the musical landscapes of pop, thrash, and basically anything and everything in between. This is a real melting pot of ideas and sounds and I for one am a big, big fan. 'Outer Body Drifter' sounds to me a bit like a robot doing it’s own version of Mr Bungles ‘Disco Volante’, and definitely has a feel of Daft Punk at their most outrageous, but just a step further. It is is hard to pin down good references to compare Black Dice to, which to be honest is always a good sign. I would imagine robots on mushrooms would come out with the sort of stuff on ‘Mr Impossible’ so the fact the three guys did it, is to me, nothing short of spectacular. You could not guess which way any tune is going. From 80’s toy gun sounds, to guitar-esque synths, ideas and sounds just seem to fly out from all over the place. This will not be for everyone’s cup of tea, but that’s just fine. If you are one that leans toward the weird, the experimental, the mental, then this album is a must. It somehow manages to work. Mind expanding and unmissable.

Black Dice - Spitz, London, 31/3/2004
New York ensemble and Fat Cat signings Black Dice recently toured Britain with their experimental music. Emma Haigh is enthralled by a show that is both "spontaneously individual, and strangely conversant between it’s three performers" at the London Spit
