Short, but sweet vinyl only latest EP from Le Volume Courbe, the project of French-born, but London-based singer-songwriter Charlotte Marionneau
Review
This EP is the debut release on Pickpocket Records, a label set up by French-born, but London-based singer-songwriter Charlotte Marionneau, who is Le Volume Courbe, and My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields.
It is a rather short but sweet EP and starts off with 'Born to Lie', which which has all the magical mysticism of a Bjork number. Simply played and upbeat and happy in sound, it is a total joy from start to finish.
'I Love the Living You' is stripped right down to Charlotte's vocal, Kevin's acoustic guitar, which has no effect peddles or distortion, and a mouth organ. It is a love song that is as beautiful as early Mazzy Star.
'Lazy' is simple, but full of electro beats, and completely at the other end of the spectrum to the previous two numbers until it ends quickly in a pop style.
'Le Petit Chevalier' ends the EP. It is sung in French, beautifully arranged and performed, and backed with sad violin and cello, making this Nico track, which they first performed at a Nico tribute at the London Social, have the effect of classic bohemian cinema shot in black and white and one of the stand-out tracks.
Absolutely fantastic.
