Engineers - Three Fact Fader

Label: KScope
Format: CD
Long overdue, but excellent and diverse album from London-based post rock/shoegazing outfit Engineers whom have returned after an absence of four years

Review

'Three Fact Fader' is the second full-length album from the London-based post rock/shoegazing outfit Engineers whom have returned after an absence of four years. It opens with 'Clean Coloured Ire,' which has a trippy Lennon-like vocal from vocalist Simon Phipps and an odd rhythm to it. Somewhat baggy in tone and also recalling Blur, it is a song to sway along to. 'Sometimes I Realise' has a vocal from Simon that is reminiscent of Neil Halstead from Slowdive's and a rhythm the recalls an upbeat Doves. 'International Dirge' features a gentle vocal and is backed by soft guitar work. It is a song for a hot summer's day, something like a stronger Coldplay. 'Helped by Science?' is very laid back, a song for a Sunday morning trip, while 'Brighter as We Fall' has all the trippiness of early Lush and Slowdive and the intensity of My Bloody Valentine. 'Hang Your Head' is much noiser, with a forward driving sound to it, while 'Crawl from the Wreckage' is a chilled out anthem. The title track is another baggy number, but also has a nu-gaze glow to it. While 'Song for Andy' has an easy, calm sway to it, 'Emergency Room' in contrast has a swagger to it. 'The Fear Has Gone' has an orchestral feel to it. It starts quietly before becoming much heavier and developing a classic rock that recalls 1970's Pink Floyd. 'Be What You Are' is very short and also has an element of Pink Floyd. 'What pushed us together closes the album and is dizzy in its sound, sounding as if it came from the Who's musical, 'Tommy'. An excellent and diverse second album from a band who have been away far too long.
