Fine second comeback album from the Undertones, which even without Feargal Sharkeu, would have had John Peel if he was still alive raving about it completely
Review
'Dig Yourself Deep' is the second album from the Undertones since they reformed back in 1999, and follows on from their 2003 comeback album, 'Get What You Need'. The band still has four original members, three of whom have written the material on this album. They might be minus Feargal Sharkey, but this is still very much classic the Undertones and, if John Peel was still alive, he would be raving about this completely.
'Dig Yourself Deep' has 14 songs and lasts just under 31 minutes. It opens up with the title track which is fast and furious, and played at breakneck speed, with vocals which are just as strong as Feargal's from his replacement, Paul McLoone.
'So Close' is darker and deeper with riffs aplenty, and has a more muffled vocal. 'Here Comes the Rain' is American in its sound, like a jangly Byrds gone new wave or a male Bangles but more furious.
'Everything You Say is Right' has an edgy 70's sound with a tad bit of the Pixies thrown into the pot for good measure. 'Him Not Me' is more thrashy, recalling the early Wedding Present and played at breakneck speed.
'We All Talked about You' is more 80's indie in its sound and has an intelligent lyrical flow to it. 'Fight My Corner' is much slower with a cool riff that carries the whole track. 'Precious Little Wonder' features full-on guitar and a very Feargal-like vocal from Paul. It is a catchy number of the kind that the band are best known for.
'Tomorrow's Tears' is another intelligent 80's style song which is reminiscent of the early James, while 'Easy Way Out' has big Stones-like riffs.
'Happy Valley' has a jangly Echo and the Bunnymen sound, while 'Move Right In' is moody and slow. 'She's So Sweet' is faster even than the Wedding Present, pogoing glory at its best.
It all ends with 'I'm Recommending Me' which has a massive sound with big riffs and brings this fine album to a fantastic end.
