Catchy, but tense-sounding second single from Von Sudenfed, the project of German techno/trance outfit Mouse on Mars and the Fall's Mark E Smith
Review
Von Sudenfed are a collaboration between Jan St Werner and Andi Toma of German techno/trance outfit Mouse on Mars and the Fall's Mark E Smith. This single is taken from their recent 'Tromatic Reflexxions' album and on this CD the track is available in its original form and a remixed version by French producer Pilooski.
I have to wonder how Mark E Smith gets on with the Mouse on Mars duo. I have seen his knob twiddling exploits on stage and he can be very annoying for other musicians - do they keep him under control or do they get on each other's nerves? I'm sure we'll never know. But they have managed to put an album and a couple of singles together so they must have managed to get on okay.
Preferring The Fall to German techno, I preferred the unmixed version of 'The Rhinohead', which had the repetitive strains you might associate with The Fall but with more electronica. 'Slow Down Ronnie', the B side, is a song about snooker player Ronnie O'Sullivan. It features too many squelchy synthesisers for me, but I quite like the fact that you can make out what Smith is singing on this and it's also a bit more lively than 'The (unremixed) Rhinohead' with quite a catchy sound to it.
It's interesting to hear this collaboration, but I'm not a huge fan of this type of dance music, at least not to sit and listen to - I'll dance to it occasionally if I'm at that kind of club or at a festival, but I wouldn't sit at home and put it on for a relaxing evening!
