Fiery and scabrous-sounding stoner rock on self-titled debut album from Torche, the new project of former Cavity and Floor stars, Steve Brooks and Juan Montoya
Review
The debut album from one-time Cavity and Floor members Steve Brooks and Juan Montoya.
Unlike Cavity, which linked monstrous down-stroke guitar with Rene Barge’s grotesque vocals, the sludgy riffs on Torque’s debut are linked with clean, sometimes harmonized voices. Although not as self-consciously pretty as some hype would have it, it does land close to mellow metal vocals like those of Sea of Green.
Torche has certainly hung on to Cavity’s scabrous noise, opening the album with crashing surf sounds that border on white noise before unleashing some Black Sabbath style guitar thunder.
Where the band excels is providing a wide pallette of sound: The furious drumming of ‘Safe’ blitzes the listener in 80 seconds; ‘Erase’ sounds like a lost Swervedriver track; ‘Fuck Addict’ lures the listener with some gently bubbling phase and phased guitar before crushing the listener with some monolithic fretwork. Some ‘Rockit’ is reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins.
‘Torche’s’ brisk 30 minutes will probably appeal to the folks who listen to Queens of the Stone Age as much as fans of The Melvins and High on Fire.
