Chicago's the Ponys recently played the London Barfly to a small audience of about 50 people, but everyone there was totally blown away by their use of sonic sound. The Ponys like to make a racket of noise, and music which is not for the faint-hearted or for those music fans who respect their ears too much either. They were there to promote this, their new debut UK album, ‘Turn the Lights Out’, which will please all fan of loud guitar based music. It opens with ‘Double Vision’ which features catchy bass, groovy guitar lines and a hip mid 60’s style vocal from singer Jered Gummere. ‘Everyday Weapon’ is all out thrash, loud in every sense, while‘Small Talk’ is very trendy in an early 90’s fashion, recollecting bands like the Pixies. The title track is much slower with a 1970’s vibe. It actually sounds a bit cheesy, and is somewhat sing-a-long, and in contrast to the other songs on the album is not noisy at all. ‘1209 Seminary’ features lots of thrashing guitars and sounds like Creation era My Bloody Valentine. ‘Shine’ again features lots of full on guitars, and is very head-on rock ‘n’ roll. ‘Kingdom of Hearts’ and ‘Poser Psychotic’ are both Creation era shoegazing numbers, while ‘Exile on My Street’, a tribute to the Stones, is trendy and hip with a shouted vocal. ‘Harakiri’ is also reminiscent of the Pixies, while ‘Maybe I’ll Try Again’ is again very thrashy.‘Pickpocket Song’ ends the album, and, needless to say, is also very full on. Definitely one for fans of Sonic Youth !
